State nature biosphere reserve "Commandorsky" has a Federal importance. It was created on the 23rd of April in 1993. The total area is 3 648 679 hectares (including the water area). The aim of the reserve is preservation of natural complexes, flora and fauna of a unique island ecosystems.
The major tourist sites are rookeries of sea mammals – sea lions, seals, and sea otters. Visiting the reserve is possible only by agreement with the directorate of the organized groups. The best time to visit the reserve is from June to September. The delivery of tourists to the reserve is by air or sea.
This is a biosphere reserve according to the International coordinating Council of UNESCO program "Man and biosphere" Presidium's decision from 6-8 November 2002, accepted after the program's council commission. It's status is confirmed by a certificate signed by the general director of UNESCO.
The objectives of the reserve are:
a) Implementation of natural territories protection and the adjacent sea area to conserve biological diversity and maintaining the natural state of protected natural complexes and objects; b) organization and carrying out of scientific researches, including conducting Annals of the nature;
c) implementation of environmental monitoring;
d) ecological education;
e) participation in the state ecological expertise of projects and layouts of economic and other objects;
f) assistance in the training of scientific personnel and specialists in the field of environmental protection;
g) the testing and implementation of the biosphere reserve landfill environmental management practices that do not deplete the natural environment and not exhaust biological resources;
h) to promote the conservation of historical-cultural and ethno-cultural heritage;
i) to assist in raising the level of local employment.
